THE ACTIVITY OF NATO – UKRAINE PARTNERSHIP NETWORK
STATEMENT
of a NATO – Ukraine Civic League
on the occasion of NATO’s 60th Anniversary
Dear colleagues!
On the 4th of April, 2009 we celebrated NATO’s 60th anniversary since signing a Washington treaty and establishment of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization. About sixty years ago democratic states joined together for the benefit of collective peace and maintenance of democratic values. Alliance’ history – it’s a history of searching a compromise, coordination of interests and dialogue establishment. Sixty years – it’s the way from the cold war up to partnership and understanding.
World has been changing – as well as the Alliance. 10 years ago, the first wave of NATO enlargement to the East occurred – event that finally marked the downfall of “Iron Curtain” that splited up Euro Atlantic space.
Its 60 year anniversary NATO was celebrating as the most powerful organization of collective defence in the world, which has to face new tasks and challenges. It is a high time to realize what the Alliance is going to be in future. At this very moment, a further NATO course is being determined. Will Ukraine follow this way?
Summit in France and Germany, at which Albania and Croatia became a competent NATO member – states after 15 years of their course towards NATO structures, demonstrated to the whole Ukrainian civic and political sector that changes are possible, but the way towards them lies through the purposeful, joint work of all political institutions at our native state firstly.
NATO – Ukraine Civic League is expressing its assurance that Alliance of a new age should include Ukraine as a state which shares joint Euro Atlantic values, supports the principles of collective security and maintains one of the most active contributors and leaders of security standards.
While celebrating 60th anniversary of Alliance foundation we would like to announce: NATO’s future is with Ukraine. Ukraine’s future – with NATO.
